DUBAI: We are midway through the cold days. Haven’t you noticed how everyone starts catching cold at home or in the office?

Dr. Heidi K. Regudo of Klinika Maharlika explained that this is so because during winter season, we usually stay more indoors which is dry, less humid and the spread of the infections transmit easily.

“If there’s a household member who’s sick, disinfect your house properly because the virus can stay up to 48 hours on the surface. Even the smallest respiratory droplet can be a source of infection,” said Regudo.

Disinfecting will help prevent the spread of the virus especially to children, she said.

“Practice the proper handwashing at home. Keep the children warm and encourage them to drink 6-8 glasses of water. Get vaccinated with the flu shot before the start of winter,” Regudo said.

She said influenza or the flu virus, is the most common illness during the winter while some can have flare ups of the atopic dermatitis, asthma, allergic rhinitis and other viral infections.

What are the dos and don’ts for children during cold season?

• Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, as that is how the virus spreads.
• Always do proper handwashing.
• Learn the proper cough etiquette. Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze and cough and dispose the used tissue in a closed bin immediately.
• Avoid close contact with those who are sick.
• It is best to avoid going to crowded places like malls, indoor parks because virus can spread quickly.
• Get your Flu vaccine.

When should a parent bring a child to the hospital/clinic?

Since Flu is the most common infection this season, keep an eye on your children. Watch out for symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough, and colds. A child can be weak looking with decrease appetite and body pains. If with any of these symptoms, please bring to the nearest clinic or hospital for an urgent assessment of your child.
