Seven Filipino seafarers were abducted by pirates from a Swiss merchant vessel in Nigerian seas on Saturday, September 22.
Aside from the seven Filipinos, five other seafarers of different nationalities from Slovenia, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia were also taken, said the Nigerian Maritime Agency.
The ship was sailing between the cities of Lagos and Port Harcourt when the incident happened. According to the ship operator, the pirates attacked when they were 45 nautical miles southwest of Bonny Island, reported Remate.
Kidnap for ransom is still rampant in the different parts of Nigeria. According to Sunday Umoren of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), they have not been contacted yet by the abductors and the seafarers are still missing.
