Duterte cannot run under the federalist gov’t, ConCom says

President Rodrigo Duterte cannot run for another presidential term even if the country transitions to a federalist government.

According to Chief Justice Reynato Puno, chairman of the Consultative Committee (ConCom) tasked to craft a constitution for the federal government, the proposed constitution states that a presidential term is still limited to six years, reported ABS-CBN.

“The term limit in the 1987 Constitution holds,” Puno said.

Earlier, ConCom has voted in favor of inclusion of national and barangay positions in the regulated prohibition on political dynasties.

The committee voted 18-1, in favor of rule that both presidential and vice presidential positions in the government cannot be taken by a second degree affinity or consanguinity of an incumbent president or vice president.

ConCom defined a political dynasty as “a family whose members are related up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity, whether such relations are legitimate, illegitimate, half or full blood, maintains or is capable of maintaining political control by succession or by simultaneously running for or holding elective positions.”

The move meant presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio cannot run for presidency in 2022.
