A jury in California has found Larry Millete guilty of first-degree murder in the disappearance and presumed killing of his Filipina wife, Maya “May” Millete.
May Millete, a civilian employee of the United States Navy, disappeared from her home in San Diego in January 2021 and has never been found.
Prosecutors argued that Larry Millete killed his wife after she told him she wanted a divorce and later disposed of her body in an undisclosed location.
During the trial, prosecutors also presented evidence that Millete had allegedly sought the help of a self-described spell caster in an attempt to make his wife fall back in love with him.
Investigators also linked him to poison hemlock, a highly toxic plant, which prosecutors said formed part of the circumstantial evidence presented in court.
The defense argued that Millete was suffering from severe depression and believed his wife was involved in another relationship.
After a six-week trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict following nearly five hours of deliberation.
The court has not yet scheduled Millete’s sentencing.
