Davao City Mayor Sebastian ‘Baste’ Duterte claimed Wednesday that the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte is intended to prevent her from running in the 2028 elections.
Speaking to reporters in The Hague, the Netherlands, Baste Duterte said he has not been closely following the impeachment trial because he believes the effort had long been planned by the administration.
“They carried out the impeachment because they want to stay in power. They are preventing Vice President Inday Sara Duterte from running in the 2028 elections. That is the main reason for the impeachment,” he said.
He also questioned the basis of the case, arguing that the allegations involving confidential funds had been expanded by adding other accusations.
According to the mayor, the impeachment is aimed at placing the vice president in a position favorable to the administration rather than allowing her to defend herself.
Despite his criticism of the proceedings, Baste Duterte acknowledged that his family has no control over the outcome of the case.
“Whatever happens to the Vice President is her destiny,” he said.
