Jose Rizal’s 1876 report card from the Ateneo Municipal de Manila will be up for auction this month, offering a rare glimpse into the student life of the national hero.
The document, dated September 20, 1876, is among the highlights of Salcedo Auctions’ The Well-Appointed Life sale set on September 27.
Valued between ₱350,000 and ₱400,000, the Spanish-language report card shows Rizal earned second honors in Historia Natural (Biology), underscoring his dedication to academics.
Historian Ambeth Ocampo earlier noted that Rizal nearly missed entry into Ateneo, arriving late for registration and being deemed too small and frail for Jesuit education. Yet, the report card proves otherwise. Rizal later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors at age 16.
Also included in the auction is Portrait of a European Gentleman, a charcoal-on-paper artwork by Rizal created during his time in Europe.
Though its estimated value is only available upon request, previous sales hint at its significance. In 2018, Rizal’s bas-relief sculpture The Filipino sold for ₱17.52 million, while his sculpture Josephine Sleeping fetched ₱31.24 million in 2024.
Both the report card and the artwork come from the descendants of Rizal’s sister, Narcisa Rizal-Lopez (1852–1939), making the pieces not just historic artifacts but intimate family heirlooms.
