Estrada clan swallows bitter pill of defeat

The Estrada clan has suffered a heavy defeat in Monday’s elections, signaling the downfall of their decades-long political clout.

Former president Joseph “Erap” Estrada was dislodged by his former ally-turned challenger for the Manila mayoralty bid Isko Moreno Domagoso, according to partial, official results from the local board of canvassers.

With over 96.87 percent of the votes canvassed as of Tuesday morning, the latest unofficial tally of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) shows Moreno has 345,774 votes against Estrada with 202,699 votes.

Meanwhile, Estrada’s sons, Jinggoy Estrada and JV Ejercito, were still outside the winning circle in the senatorial race as of Tuesday morning. The placed 15th and 13th, respectively, according to partial, unofficial results.

His nephew ER Ejercito also lost in Laguna’s gubernatorial race as Ramil Hernandez leads with more than 400,000 votes. Even ER’s son John Paul lost in the mayoral race of Pagsanjan, Laguna. Only ER’s wife Girlie won. She was elected vice mayor of Pagsanjan with just a lead of less than 2,000 votes.

Jingoy’s daughter Janella Ejercito-Estrada was also defeated by Francis Zamora with a lead of 10,000 votes in the race for San Juan City mayorship, a post held by the Ejercito-Estrada clan for five decades.

The Zamora family was an ally of the Estrada-Ejercito clan for many years.
