Dubai Police arrested an Asian couple in India for stealing a Dh300,000 diamond from a jewelry store in Dubai.
In a video released by Dubai Police containing a series of CCTV footages, the couple is seen entering a shop in Deira’s Gold Souq before stealing the diamond after distracting the shop’s staff.
While the male suspect was asking the staff several questions, the female suspect opened the glass door where the jewelries are displayed and hid one of the diamonds under her jacket.
Following the incident, the couple went to Dubai Mall to change clothes and immediately traveled to Dubai International Airport to transit to India and then to Hong Kong.
The staff, meanwhile, immediately reported the crime to the Dubai Police after noticing the missing diamond and checking the CCTV footages. Dubai Police coordinated with the Interpol and Indian authorities to apprehend the couple.
When the couple’s plane landed in India, they were immediately apprehended and sent back to Dubai.
During investigation, the couple admitted to stealing the diamond which the woman swallowed for it to be smuggled overseas.
The diamond was later on retrieved through the help of a doctor.
Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, hailed the efforts of the local authorities, Indian authorities, and the Interpol for the successful operation.
