Dubai school scraps book with same-sex marriage content

A school in Dubai has pulled out one of the books in their library after discovering that it has content dealing with same-sex marriage.

The book, titled ‘All Families are Different’, was discovered to have same-sex marriage content after one of the students of the school borrowed the book from the school library and brought it home, reported Khaleej Times.

The mother of the child then proceeded to read the book to her child and was surprised about the content of the book.

“Families come in different sizes, shapes and colours. Some are big. Some are small. And some have lots of furry friends… I used to think every family had to have a mommy, a daddy and a kid like me. But today I learned that all families are different,” the book reads.

Zoe, a character in the book, was reportedly mentioned to have two dads, and another named Thomas, has two moms.

While the mother of the child applauded how the book discussed acceptance, she still reported the discovery to the authorities in the school who advised her to return the book.

The report quoted Mohammed Darwish, chief of regulations and permits commission at Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). He underscored that school textbooks should “conform to societal and cultural values of the UAE while enriching learner experience”.
