Consul General Cortes urges overstaying OFWs in UAE to avail amnesty in its final month

Consul General Paul Raymund Cortes encouraged all undocumented overseas Filipino workers in the UAE to avail of the government’s amnesty program which will end by October 31.

Through a Facebook post, Cortes gave an update about the amnesty program saying that the Philippine Consulate in Dubai has already helped nearly 900 OFWs return home to the Philippines.

He also urged other overstaying OFWs to visit the Consulate to seek help in availing the said amnesty.

“Hanggang 31 October 2018 na lang po kaya punta na po kayo sa Consulado at nang matulungan kayong mag-avail ng amnesty,” Cortes said.

Cortes, who headed the OFW helpdesk at the Al Aweer center during the first day of the amnesty program, has previously advised Filipino applicants to go to the Philippine Consulate in Al Qusais first so that they can be provided with their travel documents and book their tickets.

“We will shoulder the Dh221 cost for exit pass and if you have an absconding case, we will also pay the Dh521 fine to remove it. Plus we will buy you a ticket back home,” Khaleej Times quoted Cortes as saying.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has announced that a total of 1,194 OFWs in the UAE have benefited from the amnesty program during the first two months of its implementation.
