ABU DHABI: Surgeons at a specialist hospital, racing against time, recently performed a C-section procedure on a 31-week pregnant Filipina, who was rushed to the facility at a late hour of the night bleeding and in extreme pain, to save her and her baby from imminent death caused by the premature separation of the placenta from the uterus or what in medical lingo is called, “placental disruption.”

“We were extremely frightened. All we wanted was to have our own baby,” said 32-year-old Alexis Ayaton Salido, who was 10 weeks short of a healthy delivery.

“With her baby in distress, there was simply no other option but to perform an emergency C-section procedure,” said Dr. Muhaj Mahdi Saleh Al Shaikhli, Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynecology at Burjeel Hospital.

The surgery revealed more blood surrounding the pre-term baby, the doctor said, explaining that this condition is usually caused by placental abruption, a condition characterized by bleeding, uterine contractions, and fetal distress.

After the premature birth, the infant was taken immediately to neonatal intensive care as he was significantly under-developed to breathe properly on his own and sustain his life. To make the case more challenging, blood clots behind the placenta prompted the medical team to perform a surgery on the baby.

“Mrs. Salido’s high-risk pregnancies can be attributed to a number of causes, but it is most likely due to her high blood pressure during pregnancy,” said Dr. Al Shaikhli.

After a few weeks in neonatal care, baby boy Carl Joseph Mondejar was taken home with a healthy. “It is a miracle that our baby Carl survived. He is our living testimony of hope and love,” said Salido.
