The Department of Tourism reminded both local and foreign tourists to respect communities and observe proper conduct when visiting Philippine destinations, following reports of an assault involving foreign visitors in Siargao.
The advisory came after reports that a group of foreign tourists allegedly attacked the owners of a local café on May 11, though the DOT did not directly mention the incident in its statement.
“We, Filipinos, are known for our warmth. But hospitality is not an invitation to disrespect our people, our culture, or our laws. Every tourist is welcome in the Philippines, so long as they come with respect,” the agency said.
It added that no one is above the law regardless of nationality.
“When it comes to the law, no one gets special treatment. Local or foreign, the standard is the same. We stand in defense of Siargao’s tourism, but more than that, we stand in defense of Filipino dignity and welfare,” it said.
Meanwhile, the local government of General Luna, Siargao confirmed on May 12 that two unidentified individuals were involved in the alleged assault and mauling of the café owners, and said authorities are conducting an investigation.
The DOT also urged the public to avoid drawing sweeping conclusions against any nationality amid social media reports identifying the alleged suspects as Israeli nationals, who reportedly reacted to the establishment’s display of support for Palestine.
“We call on the public to not paint an entire race or nationality with the same brush. The actions of a few do not speak for the many,” it added.
