A U.S. official said that President Donald Trump is dissatisfied with a proposal from Iran, citing its failure to address Tehran’s nuclear program.
“He doesn’t love the proposal,” the official said, referring to Trump.
Earlier in the day, Trump met with his top national security advisers to discuss the offer, as tensions between the United States and Iran remain at a stalemate, with energy supplies from the region already affected.
Iranian sources said the proposal seeks to defer discussions on its nuclear activities until after the conflict ends and maritime disputes in the Gulf are resolved. However, Washington has maintained that nuclear issues must be addressed at the outset of any agreement.
Despite the impasse, mediation efforts continue, with sources from Pakistan saying work to narrow differences between the two sides is ongoing.
Prospects for renewed diplomacy, however, have dimmed after Trump canceled a planned visit to Islamabad by his special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner over the weekend.
