Dubai churches suspend in-person services amid safety directives

Several churches across Dubai will suspend in-person services starting April 3 in compliance with UAE authorities’ directives to protect public safety and community well-being.

Parishes across denominations have quickly adapted, moving worship online and asking congregants to avoid visiting church premises until further notice.

At St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oud Metha, the 6 p.m. Good Friday service will be streamed live on the church’s YouTube channel, allowing worshippers to participate remotely. Similarly, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Jebel Ali has cancelled all masses, with no online services announced.

“Parishioners are requested to refrain from visiting the church premises, in the interest of safety and community well-being,” read the announcement.

The Mar Thoma Parish in Jebel Ali confirmed that all weekend services will be conducted online, with access details to be shared shortly. “Keep the whole country and our surroundings in prayer. Pray for safety and for peace and calm in the region,” the parish said.

At St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral in Oud Metha, all services, including Good Friday observances, will also be held online at the usual timings. St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in Jebel Ali has cancelled Friday’s liturgy on April 3, as well as all other services and activities until further notice.

Church authorities emphasized that these measures are temporary and precautionary. “We pray that God keeps everyone safe, and we will keep you updated with any new developments. May God be with you and protect you always,” they said.

Rev. Prem Mitra, chaplain at Holy Trinity Church in Oud Metha, also confirmed that the parish is closed with immediate effect. “All services are hereby cancelled until further notice. Kindly ensure that your congregation members are informed promptly,” he said.

Church leaders across Dubai have urged adherence to official safety guidelines and encouraged worshippers to stay connected through digital platforms while continuing prayers from home.
