PH official cites COVID-19 transmissions now ‘per family’, recommends wearing face masks at home

Families in the Philippines have been warned that ongoing trends of transmission of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is now per family.

The Philippines’ chief implementer of the government’s COVID-19 response Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. revealed that densely-populated areas could possibly turn to critical areas, citing difficulties of practicing social distancing at such places.

“Based doon sa data na nakita natin sa hospitals, ang contamination ngayon is not only by individuals, ngayon by families na. Nakita natin ‘yung vulnerability talaga sa workplace at saka ‘yung vulnerability ng mga informal communities na talagang hindi nag-o-observe ng minimum health standards,” said Galvez.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año advised the public to wear face masks even within their homes particularly for households who find it hard to practice social distancing. He furthered that they could even wear face shields at home as an added preventive measure.

“Isipin natin ngayon ang transmission ngayon ay buong pamilya na, pami-pamilya… rich or poor talagang buong pamilya… ang pinaka-importante diyan kung talagang di nila maiwasan, magsuot sila ng mask. Advisable din ‘yung face shield diyan,” said Año during an interview with GMA News.

Año furthered that apart from compulsory use of face shields in public transportation, the same preventive measure should also be practiced at public spaces and areas including markets, quarantine facilities and hospitals.

“Ito ay ine-encourage at puwedeng i-require sa lugar na maraming tao, for example ‘yung mass transport, mga establishments, mga isolation facilities, hospitals, sa mga palengke, sa mga work places, kung saan ‘yung maraming tao at hindi mo mamaintain ‘yung two-meter distance kasi dapat two-meter distance so makakatulong ‘yung face shield,” said Año.
