MIAA to implement stricter rules on issuance of visitors’ pass in NAIA

The Manila International Airport Authority on Friday, May 18, said it will be implementing stricter rules on the issuance of visitors’ passes at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

MIAA General Manager Eddie Monreal said the move was prompted by the recent case of jewelry smuggling at NAIA.

Monreal expressed hopes the move to review policies on the issuance of ID and pass would help avoid smuggling cases in NAIA.

He added that a memorandum has been issued to review aforementioned policies following the report of a group of international observers which showed a high number of non-passengers allowed entrance in NAIA.

Earlier, a customs employee at NAIA and two others were apprehended for smuggling 1.9 kilograms of gold jewelry into the country. The employees used an expired access pass to smuggle the jewelries.

Monreal said the case opened the need for stricter monitoring of movements of NAIA employees, particularly to ensure that they are stationed only in their assigned departments.
