Midday break for outdoor workers until September

The UAE is set to implement the midday break policy for outdoor workers starting June 15.

Outdoor workers, especially construction laborers, will benefit from the UAE rule that requires suspension of work between 12:30 and 3:00 pm until September 15 to avoid heat-related health problems during the hottest months of the year.

In Dubai, the Standing Committee for Labor Affairs said it will conduct regular spot checks throughout the city during the three months of the ban.

“The committee will conduct seven patrols. There will be three inspectors in each patrol, representing the labor committee, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization, and Dubai Municipality to ensure full enforcement of the midday ban as per regulations in this respect,” Arabian Business quoted Labor Affairs Chairman Major General Obaid Muhair bin Surour as saying.

Employers who will violate the rule will be fined Dh5,000 per worker, except for operations that deal with danger prevention, repairs, damage, malfunction or loss.

The Filipino Times previously reported that under the midday break rule, employers are required to distribute equipment to provide comfort to workers during break hours such as air-conditioners, sunshades and cold water. First-aid should also be available.
