Trump to raise Philippine concerns with Xi, Palace says

U.S. President Donald Trump has assured President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that he will raise the Philippines’ concerns during his next meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Malacañang said Thursday.

According to the Presidential Communications Office, Trump gave the assurance during a phone call with Marcos, in which the two leaders also discussed the current global economic and security situation.

The phone conversation came a day after Marcos met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Malacañang.

During that meeting, Marcos briefed Rubio on the latest developments in the South China Sea, the Presidential Communications Office said.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Lipton confirmed that the two presidents spoke by telephone.

The Presidential Communications Office did not say when Trump and Xi are expected to meet, but said Trump committed to conveying the Philippines’ concerns during his next meeting with the Chinese leader.
