The Office of the Ombudsman is nearing the filing of a plunder case against former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez over alleged irregularities in government flood control projects.
Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla said Friday that the case has reached the preliminary investigation stage.
Remulla said investigators are carefully building the case to ensure it can withstand legal challenges once filed.
“Many people are impatient, but we have to be deliberate so that when the case is filed, it will not easily be dismantled by the defense,” he said.
The Ombudsman had earlier identified Romualdez as the alleged “purported mastermind” in the controversy involving flood control projects.
No formal charges have yet been filed in court as the preliminary investigation remains ongoing.
