Abu Dhabi authorities are urging residents to take basic safety precautions before leaving for summer holidays, warning that simple preparations can help prevent residential fires and protect homes while families are away.
The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority and Abu Dhabi Police said many fires in vacant homes can be avoided by unplugging unnecessary electrical appliances, shutting off the main gas supply and ensuring smoke alarms are working properly before traveling.
Officials also advised residents to inspect electrical wiring for damage, store gas cylinders in well-ventilated areas and avoid leaving lithium batteries, gas canisters and lighters exposed to direct sunlight because of the risk of overheating.
As part of its “Summer in Safety” campaign, Abu Dhabi Police also urged homeowners to lock all doors and windows, activate security systems where available, safely store valuables and refrain from posting travel plans or extended absences on social media.
Authorities recommended asking a trusted relative or friend to check on the property during long trips.
Civil Defence officials said electrical short circuits, overloaded outlets, chargers left plugged in, faulty appliances, gas leaks and flammable materials near heat sources remain among the leading causes of fires in unoccupied homes.
The agency also encouraged residents to enroll in the Hassantuk smart fire alarm system, which automatically alerts a 24-hour monitoring center when smoke or fire is detected, allowing emergency responders to react quickly even if homeowners are overseas.
