Pope Francis seeks prayers for Afghanistan

Pope Francis is asking for prayers for Afghanistan as the Taliban seized the country’s capital Kabul.

In his Angelus address, Pope Francis said he joins in the “unanimous concern for the situation in Afghanistan.”

“I ask all of you to pray with me to the God of peace, so that the clamor of weapons might cease and solutions can be found at the table of dialogue,” the Pope said.

“Only this way can the martyred population of that country – men, women, elderly and children – return to their homes and live in peace and security in full reciprocal respect,” he added.

The situation in Afghanistan has forced thousands of people to desperately flee the country.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country on Sunday as Islamist militants entered capital city, Kabul.
