Sharjah Police apprehended over 9,000 motorists through radars during the hours of National Disinfection Program, Khaleej Times reported.
Sharjah Police activated radar and deployed 120 cars to catch motorists disobeying the stay at home directives initiated by the government to combat coronavirus pandemic.
Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of the Sharjah Police said every vehicle on road during the sterilization hours from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. will be dealt case by case.
“Traffic has been smooth as most people adhered to the regulations by staying at their homes, working remotely and stepping out just for necessities,” he said adding that they are still determining whether the motorists caught by radars as violations or they are exempted due to nature of work.
“The exit permit system was suspended as many people did not understand how to use it,” Al Shamsi added.
Al Shamsi said the police will not tolerate any actions that will go against the measures being taken to ensure the health and safety of all members of society during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Meanwhile, traffic violations will be discounted by 50 percent after April 1 while seizure of vehicles were cancelled since March 31 according to the latest decision of Sharjah Executive Council.
“The discount will be in effect for three months and is subject to renewal. Traffic black points will also be cancelled, vehicles seized will be released and the discount on violations will be automatically updated,” Al Shamsi said.
“An integrated team will be available throughout the day to answer all public queries. All Ministry of Interior (MoI) services are now available online or through the app,” he added.
