Sen. Risa Hontiveros said divorce does not break marriages and families. Instead, she said it makes people respect marriage more through discerning on their choices.
During the first hearing of the proposed divorce bill, Hontiveros reiterated the need to legalize it.
She said the proposed bill on the dissolution of marriage “protect the children from abuse and rebuild broken families.”
She counters the belief that divorce would only break marriages, this after religious groups expressed fear on the proposed bill as it “destroys divine order of God”.
“It’s not divorce that breaks the marriage. It’s the abuse on the oppression, the lovelessness that preceded it” she said.
For the lady senator, the divorce bill only expands the chances for people who are under toxic marriages.
