Expat jailed after sending death threats on WhatsApp

The Court of First Instance in Dubai recently charged and detained an expat who sent death threats through WhatsApp to one of his contacts if she got him jailed.

The 39-year old expat who used to work as a driver sent several messages to the complainant, one of which read: ‘Do you think you will live in Ethiopia? You are going to die.’

Another message even posed a threat to the complainant’s infant: ‘If you get me arrested, you won’t live in Ethiopia and neither will your offspring.’

The complaint dates back to January 2019 after it was lodged at the Al Qusais police station. The expat who sent the incriminating messages now faces a charge of making criminal threats online, as per a report from Khaleej Times.

The 21-year-old complainant shared that she only knew the defendant for around seven months through her brother who is a driver as well. “He would give me lifts sometimes. We had no previous disputes. But in January this year, he threatened to kill me.”

Investigations have revealed that she likewise lent the defendant Dh 2,500, apart from the Dh 2,000 that the defendant already owes to her brother. She even gave the defendant a three-month deadline after missing out on his payment. “I gave him a three-month deadline to pay the money back as he requested. But he did not settle his dues. When I claimed the money back again, he threatened me.”

The defendant admitted to the public prosecution investigator that he was the one who sent the messages, a copy of which were translated and used as part of the evidence on the case.

The court will issue the verdict this May 29.
