Former Senator Heherson “Sonny” Alvarez dies due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Senate President Vicente Sotto III confirmed Monday.
Alvarez, 80, has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and under critical condition, according to a report from CNN Philippines.
He was rushed at the Manila Doctors Hospital along with his wife Philippine Educational Theater Association (Peta) founder Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, 76, who also contracted the disease.
Meanwhile, his wife is slowly recovering and has been taken out of intubation.
He has undergone an experimental plasma treatment for the respiratory disease and received plasma infusion.
Alvarez served as a senator from June 30, 1987 until June 30, 1998.
Prior to his senate post, he also served as the Secretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform from May 1, 1986 until 1987.
