There will now be a crackdown on gambling in public places in Sharjah, especially in residential areas and villas rented to carry out the illegal practice.
According to a top Sharjah Police official quoted by Khaleej Times (KT), “Insad” or also known as residential patrols have been intensified in various parts of the city of Sharjah, targeting gamblers, street vendors, beggars and people selling pirated CDs and banned tobacco products.
A tenant of a villa was apprehended last year and admitted he rented out his place to be used as a venue for illegal gambling.
The campaign aims to reduce these negative incidents during the winter season. They have zeroed in on areas which house a huge number of violators that include infiltrators, men absconding from their sponsors and those wanted by security authorities.
The official stressed that they will not stop until violators working and staying illegally in the country are out.
Last year, they were able to arrest a number of Asians in crackdowns on gambling dens who usually gather in parks, green areas and squares to gamble.
