Abu Dhabi: A man from another Gulf country is on trial in Abu Dhabi on charges of illegally entering a local endangered animal reserve and killing a deer.
The trial at Abu Dhabi’s Court of Appeals started this week after a court of first instance convicted the defendant and sentenced him to two months in prison and fined him Dh5,000.
The unnamed man appealed the sentence, claiming that he did not know he was inside a reserve and that he accidentally hit the deer with his car.
But the prosecutor countered the claims by saying the defendant banged into the deer and then used a knife to slaughter the animal and take it home.
Police arrested the defendant after cameras showed he ran over the deer inside the reserve area, slaughtered it and took it home.
Newspapers said the man was charged with illegally entering a reserve and violating a ban on hunting endangered species in the UAE.
