Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as the new Miss Universe 2019.
The 26-year-old looked stunned when she beat first runner-up Miss Puerto Rico, Madison Anderson, 24, whose name was announced after fan favorite Miss Mexico, Sofia Aragon, 25.
But the most unforgettable moment in the pageant was Zozibini’s powerful and inspiring answer to Steve Harvey.
Harvey: What is the most important thing we should be teaching to young girls today?
Zozibini Tunzi: I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time. Not because we don’t want to but because of what society is labeled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings on the world and that we should be given every opportunity. And that we should be teaching to these young girls to take up space. Nothing is important is taking up space in society and cementing yourself. Thank you.
It was immediately followed by an astounding cheer and applause from the crowd.
