Magnitude 7.1 earthquake jolts Davao Oriental

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit Davao Oriental on Saturday, December 29, the the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

According to PHIVOLCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the ocean with a depth of 49 kilometers.

Intensity V was reported in Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental; Gian, Sarangani; and Koronadal City.

Meanwhile, Intensity IV was reported in General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotobato; Alabel and Kiamba, Sarangani; Mati City and Manay in Davao Oriental; and Davao City.

Intensity III was reported in Makilala, North Cotobato; Valencia City and Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon; Cagayan de Oro City; Tagum City; Mabini, Compostela Valley; and Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte.

Residents of Kadingilan and Don Carlos, Bukidnon; Tagoloan and El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental; M’lang, North Cotobato; and Surallah in South Cotobato experienced Intensity II quake while residents of Zamboanga City experienced Intensity I quake.

Another magnitude 5.6 earthquake was reported later on in the same area as residents are advised to take continuous caution for aftershocks.

Since the quake was reported in the ocean, a tsunami warning was issued in Compostela Valley, Davao Del Norte, Davao Del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao City, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Agusan Del Norte, Agusan Del Sur, Surigao Del Norte, and Surigao Del Sur. The warning was recalled a few hours after.

“With this, any effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed and therefore DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled recommendations prescribed in our Tsunami Advisory issued for this event,” the advisory said.
