9.4 million passengers passport, credit card details stolen in Cathay Pacific hack

Major international airline Cathay Pacific recently revealed that about 9.4 million customers had their personal records stolen due to a data breach or ‘hack’ that occured last March.

This breach includes the passport information of the customers, which may have also compromised their identity card numbers, full names, birthdates, postal addresses, and credit card details as reported by The Independent.

The airline expressed their regret about the incident on Wednesday, saying, “We are very sorry for any concern this data security event may cause our passengers.”

According to reports, Cathay Pacific tracked the breach during a review of its IT security processes. It showed that someone has hacked into their system that revealed the 9.4 million customers involved. The breach also leaked information on how and when their customers had travelled.

However, the international airline affirmed that no passwords were compromised during the hack. “The company has no evidence that any personal information has been misused. The IT systems affected are totally separate from its flight operations systems, and there is no impact on flight safety.”

Cathay Pacific is an international airline based in Hong Kong but serves flights around the world such as North America, Europe, China, Taiwan, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
