Cayetano to resign as foreign affairs secretary, Duterte reveals

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday, October 9, revealed that Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) secretary Alan Peter Cayetano will be resigning from his post after the latter’s decision to run in the 2019 midterm elections.

In a press briefing, Duterte said that Cayetano will be running as congressman of Taguig City, prompting him to seek for a replacement in the foreign affairs department.

“[Cayetano will be] running as congressman sa distrito niya,” Duterte said.

Duterte said he has found a new foreign affairs secretary who will replace Cayetano but refused to reveal the replacement’s identity.

“I have a name. He agreed, but he did not authorize me to name him now,” said Duterte.

Under election rules, Cayetano would have to step down from his post on or before October 17, the last day of filing of certificates of candidacies for the May 2019 elections.

Duterte appointed Cayetano as foreign affairs secretary in 2017.

Cayetano will be running as Taguig City’s representative which is currently occupied by his sister, Pia, who is reportedly eyeing for a seat in the Senate.
