An amateur Filipina singer went on trial in Abu Dhabi after posting a video on her Instagram account which was deemed insulting to Islam.

Prosecutors said the Filipina posted a video of her singing while pointing her left hand to a mosque in her background, reported Khaleej Times.

The Filipina has been referred to the Criminal Court of First Instance by the public prosecutors in Abu Dhabi after cybercrime officials came across her video.

The defendant has been charged with blasphemy but she denied such charges in court.

Nashwa Al Qubaisi, the lawyer of the Filipina, said that the charges were unreasonable and that her client did not commit any form of crime.

Her lawyer said there is also no enough evidence to prove that she insulted the Islam religion in her video.

Al Qubaisi also gave the judge a comprehensive document which contained the defense of the Filipina. She also asked for the defendant to be cleared of her charges because she was innocent.

The court trial has been adjourned to a later date.
