Abused OFW dies of brain tumor thought to be headache

by | TOP STORIES

An abused overseas Filipina worker (OFW) had succumbed to her death on June 8 after suffering from brain cancer.

OFW Sabina Gipa died of brain cancer which was initially thought as a simple headache, reported GMA News.

Gipa, an OFW in Saudi, was also left to the custody of her fellow distressed Filipina workers in a dormitory provided by the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh.

Gipa would drink paracetamols for what she though as mere headache.

In a video, Gipa is seen weak due to her condition. Although having a hard time speaking, Gipa still managed to say a few words complaining about her suffering from her employer and her headache.

According to Gipa’s husband, Walter, he reported the alleged abuse and failing health condition of his wife to her recruiters after seeing the video.

“Alam niyo ang sabi sa ‘kin, sir? ‘Ang asawa niyo okay naman d’on. Two hours lang nagtratrabaho ‘yung asawa niyo saka ‘yung asawa niyo nagbabaliw-baliwan,'” Walter said, referring to Gipa’s recruiter’s explanation on the OFW’s state in Saudi.

It took two more weeks before Gipa was transferred to a hospital where she eventually died.

Her death certificate reveals the OFW’s headaches were caused by her brain cancer.

Gipa’s family blamed her recruitment agency for the lack of urgency on acting on the OFW’s case.

They said some things could have been done had the recruitment agency listened to their earlier appeals.
