More than 12,000 jaywalkers fined in Sharjah

Sharjah Police has fined over 12,800 jaywalkers during January and May.

According to a Gulf News report, a total of 12,871 people were fined for jaywalking during the period, five cases of which were recorded during the holy month of Ramadan.

Sharjah Police reminded that jaywalking is an offense punishable under the UAE Traffic Law and would entail a fine worth Dh400 (approx. P5,753).

They also reminded pedestrians to understand the risks of violating safety rules and beware of their safety. Sharjah Police also advised pedestrians to only cross the road on designated areas.

Authorities added that pedestrians are discouraged from crossing roads with speed limits higher than 80km/h.

Likewise, motorists could also be fined if they get in the way of pedestrians.

Article 43 of the Federal Penal Code says that a motorist who did not give priority to pedestrians at designated crossing ares would be fined Dh500 and would incur six traffic black points.

Meanwhile, Article 48 states that a driver would be fined Dh500 for parking at pedestrian crossing.

Lastly, Article 111 says that stopping the vehicle in a manner that causes danger to jaywalkers or impedes the movement of pedestrians calls for Dh200 fine and three black points.
