Dh5,000 fine, shutdown for social media influencers in UAE who will fail to do this by June

Social media influencers and online media websites operating in the UAE have been encouraged by the National Media Council (NMC) to register and obtain media licenses to dodge hefty fines.

The NMC announced during a roundtable interview with members of the media on Tuesday, May 15, that influencers, social media outlets and electronic publishers must get e-media and trade licenses to be able to continue their operations in the UAE.

Costs for these two licenses vary depending on free zone and mainland category, but the NMC said the starting price for one e-media license is at Dh15,000, reported Khaleej Times.

Social media influencers who get paid to promote brands must have a trade license before registering with the NMC for their e-media license.

The NMC also reminded influencers and online media companies that they only have until June to apply for an e-media license via the NMC’s website.

If they fail to comply with the requirements, these entities will have their social media accounts and websites shut down, on top of a Dh5000 fine.

“We urge all electronic media agencies and influencers to register before the expiration of the grace period to avoid fines or being inconvenienced,” Dr Rashid Al Nuaimi, executive director of Media Affairs at the NMC, said.

“The new guidelines seek to enhance the contribution of electronic media to the wider publishing industry, providing legal protection for the outlets and enhancing their competitiveness, all in an effort to increase advertising spend and grow the sector as a whole,” he added.
