POEA: Russia, China promising destinations for OFWs

The Philippine government is looking at China and Russia as possible deployment destinations of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Head of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Bernard Olalia said Russia and China have opened their doors for OFWs looking for jobs.

“Russia is opening their market for the first time to the Philippines,” he told Business Mirror.

“They want a government-to-government deployment scheme, just like what we did with China,” Olalia added.

Russia is hiring skilled workers in the construction industry while China is looking for 2,000 English teachers this year.

Czech Republic and San Marino are also negotiating labor deals.

Olalia added that several countries also have high demand for jobs in the labor sector. Japan and South Korea’s aging population prompts the country to hire health workers while Singapore’s booming technology industry calls for the hiring of technology workers.

The Philippines is looking for other options for OFWs following reports of abuse in Kuwait.
