Dubai Airports to roll out smart gates in May

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs — Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) is set to launch the “Smart Gate”, a quick and easy alternative to standard manual passport control counters.

“It enables each passenger to pass through immigration without assistance or travel document[s] or ID and within only 10 seconds,” Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director of GDRFA-Dubai, said.

The roll out of the new Smart Gate is part of initiatives unveiled by the GDRFA-Dubai during the Dubai International Government Achievements Exhibition held at the Dubai World Trade Center.

“The new system has successfully [undergone] the experimental stage and we are planning to put it into action by the end of May,” Al Marri added.

Al Marri explained that the new gate can identify travellers through their passports, Emirates ID, e-gate D ad even a Qr barcode from the GDRFA app, making it process 7 seconds faster than older passport control gates.
