Aguirre after DOJ resignation: “We have delivered on our promise”

Resigned justice secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said he was able to accomplish his promise to make the Department of Justice (DOJ) better than before.

“In our own humble way, we have delivered on our promise to make the DOJ better than when we found it,” Aguirre said in a statement.

Aguirre also extended his gratitude toward the members of DOJ during his time as justice secretary.

“The DOJ is better not because of me but because everybody committed heart, body and soul to march towards a single cadence. I salute the good men and women of the DOJ for showing me how it is to serve selflessly in government,” he said.

“As I leave the Department of Justice, I find comfort in the thought that, by our collective efforts, we have improved the DOJ in key areas. We have achieved this by hard work and indomitable faith in the protection, providence and guidance of the Almighty.”

The outgoing justice secretary also thanked the President Rodrigo Duterte for the opportunity to serve his Cabinet.

On Thursday, April 5, Duterte announced the resignation of Aguirre at an event in Malacanang, saying, “I accepted the resignation of Vit Aguirre. I’m looking for his replacement.”

Thereafter, Duterte appointed Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra as the new justice secretary.
