Duterte approves 6-month closure of Boracay

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the closure of Boracay for 6 months, starting on April 26, in the middle of the peak summer season.

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque announced the closure of the world renowned tourist destination via Twitter.

“Bora closed for six month effective 26 April,” Roque said.

As per reports, Duterte made the approval during the 24th Cabinet meeting in Malacañang on Wednesday.

No further details were provided.

The closure of Boracay came after the recommendation the Department of the Interior and Local Government for a “total” closure.

The president said last February 10 that he is alarmed by the environmental violations of many commercial establishments in the popular tourist destination and that it has been turned into a “cesspool”.
