Cebu Pacific to mount special flight for repatriation of OFWs in Kuwait

Cebu Pacific has announced it would dispatch a special flight to Kuwait as President Rodrigo Duterte urged overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on Friday to leave the Gulf country in 72 hours amid reported abuses of Filipino there.

“Cebu Pacific will be mounting a special flight to Kuwait to assist our kababayans who wish to be repatriated to the Philippines,” the airline said in a statement.

“We are coordinating with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait on the airlift details and other travel arrangements. We will provide further information once these are finalized,” Cebu Pacific added.

On Friday, the president asked Filipinos in Kuwait to come home after the woman whose body was found inside a freezer in Kuwait City was identified as a Filipina.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III is set to issue on Monday a total deployment ban order of OFWs to Kuwait.

“A formal order on total deployment ban will be issued by Secretary (Silvestre) Bello on Monday,” said DOLE Spokesperson Raul Francia.

The DOLE official said they still have to thresh out other details, specifically on the workers that would be covered by the order.

Francia also clarified that the order of President Duterte to bring home OFWs within 72 hours only covers workers who would like to come home, distressed workers as well as the 2,000 who applied for amnesty.
