LOOK: P5 coin featuring Bonifacio to be issued in December

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) announced Wednesday, November 29, that the New Generation Coin (NGC) P5 coin that features Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio will be released in December.

The P5 New Generation Currency Coin Series would be released in silver.

BSP that the advance release of the new coin “highlights the 120th death anniversary of the Filipino patriot this year and his 154th birthday on November 30”.

Bonifacio’s portrait is etched on the obverse of the coin, with the markings: “Andres Bonifacio”, “5-Piso” and “Republika ng Pilipinas” in bold font.

The reverse side shows a Tayabak—a Philippine endemic plant that climbs tall forest trees—the central bank logo, and “Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas” in microprint.

The new coin is 25-millimeters in diameter and weighs approximately 7.4 grams.

The rest of the denominations of the NGC Coin Series will be released and circulated January next year.

The current P5 coin bears the portrait of former President Emilio Aguinaldo and comes in gold color.

In July, the BSP announced the dropping of the 10-centavo coin from the roster and the launch of the redesigned coins before the end of the year.

The existing one-centavo, 5-centavo, 10-centavo, 25-centavo, P1, and P5 coins have been in circulation since 1995, while the P10-coin with the profiles of Bonifacio and Apolinario Mabini on the obverse side was issued in 2001.
