PH’s national defense says ‘sorry’ to China for using Taiwan’s logo at ceremony

Two months after the Philippine News Agency (PNA) used the logo of a fruit processing company in a story about the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), another government agency committed a similar mistake.

The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) on Thursday, October 5, used Taiwan’s logo in an event thanking the Chinese government for the second batch of assault rifles donated to the Philippines.

In a banner hoisted during the handover ceremony attended by  Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua, DND used the logo of Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense instead of China’s.

The National Defense issued an apology to China on Monday, October 9, for the mishap.

“We have issued an official apology to the government and the people of the People’s Republic of China through His Excellency Zhao Jianhua, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Philippines,” DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong statement read.

The island nation of Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China (ROC), broke away from mainland China after the end of World War II.

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) considers Taiwan as its 23rd province, hoping it will be reunified with the mainland someday under its ‘One China Policy’.
