PH embassies, offices in Middle East urged to streamline contingency plans for OFWs

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) called on Philippine embassies and consulates abroad, including in the Middle East, to streamline their contingency plans to ensure the safety of Filipino migrants amid geopolitical threats.

DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano’s order came amid North Korea’s plan to carry out a nuclear missile strike against Guam, an American trust territory.

He said aside from issues that boiled out from North Korea’s threats, tensions in other parts of the world, such as the Middle East, could also affect Filipino nationals.

“Our people all over the world are counting on us to lead them to safety in case worse comes to worst. It is thus important to make sure that all our contingency plans are regularly reviewed and updated,” PNA quoted Cayetano as saying.

He added, “we should make sure that we are always ready to respond quickly and effectively.”

Cayetano earlier assured that the Philippines and the Association of Southeast Nations will exercise a decisive diplomatic approach for a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear threat, which could affect 42,800 OFWs in Guam.
