Whatsapp video calls in the UAE has been blocked in the absence of a move by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority as regards its policy on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
Officials said Whatsapp was doing some upgrades which caused the video call service to be available in the UAE albeit briefly starting Wednesday evening till around noon today.
UAE residents already enjoying video calls with friends and relatives from back home including the Philippines, were dumbfounded when subsequent calls did not pull through.
The TRA it will be noted has a standing policy on VoIP only licensees etisalat and du, to provide telecommunications services in the UAE including VoIP services.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has not amended its VoIP regulatory policy since December 30, 2009.
