Dubai courts uphold not-guilty verdict for cleaner on sexual assault case

Efforts by prosecutors to overturn a not-guilty verdict in the case of an office cleaner accused of sexual assault have failed.

Dubai Criminal Court cleared the 34-year-old Indian of touching a woman’s breast in October, reported The National.

On May 15, the 28-year-old Filipina was working late at her office in Dubai Healthcare City.

“About 9:30 pm I went to my desk to take my bag and laptop then leave, but I found the doors locked so I called for the cleaner to open them for me,” the accountant reportedly said.

She said when she walked out, the man touched her breast. “I jumped away from him and he started apologizing,” the woman, who informed security and her manager, added.

“The man was arrested after she lodged a complaint and he said his elbow touched her breast by mistake,” a police officer reportedly said.

The cleaner denied a sexual assault charge in court and was found not guilty, said the news portal. The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld the original verdict.
