UAE-based Filipino educator receives PH presidential award

A UAE-based Filipino educator is among 23 recipients of Manila’s “2016 Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organisations Overseas.”

To be awarded along with other carefully selected awardees from 23 countries, Canadian University Dubai-School of Business Administration-Human Resources Management chairman/associate professor Dr. Rommel Pilapil Sergio will be conferred the Pamana ng Pilipino (Philippine Heritage/Legacy) Award by President Rodrigo Duterte at Malacanang Palace (Presidential Palace) on Dec.19.

In August this year, Dr. Sergio was also chosen as the The Filipino Time’s Educator of the Year.

The ‘Pamana ng Pilipino’ Award will be his second distinction just for this month, adding yet another feather in his cap. Dr. Sergio also grabbed the “Outstanding Global Research Award” by the Philippine-based International Association of Scholarly Publishers, Editors, and Reviewers (IASPER) and Cromwell University-UK a fortnight back in Dubai.

In 2014, Sergio reportedly got IASPER’s “Outstanding Global Researcher Award,” a lifetime achievement category.

He has so far 40 published full research academic papers on emotional intelligence, change management, human resources management practices, and work values he had completed by himself or with classmates from post-university graduate studies as well as with colleagues since 2001.

In July 2015, Sergio who has so far harvested 15 awards from the US, Australia, UAE, UK, Hong Kong and the Philippines was nominated by a fellow Filipino in the UAE for the “Bagong Bayani (New Hero) Award” of the Manila’s Department of Labour and Employment.

Sergio volunteers his service to many OFWs in the UAE as a counseling psychologist. His most recent community engagement was providing psycho-social training for selected employees of the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai for them to be competent counselors for distressed OFWs.

“In my almost 16 years teaching experience, I have always been involved as a volunteer counseling psychologist in various settings. This enables me to extend my services beyond the usual teaching in my current university,” Sergio told TFT in an interview in September 2016.
