PH wins Olympic silver medal again after 20 years

RIO DE JANEIRO: Thanks to female weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines has bagged a silver medal again after 20 years.

Diaz broke the Olympic medal drought for the country by winning in the women’s 53 kg class of the weightlifting competitions of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This is the second time a Filipino has won silver in the Olympics since Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco’s win in boxing at the 1996 Atlanta games, media reports said.

Diaz reportedly lifted 88 kg in the snatch, and 112 kg in the clean and jerk, for an overall lift of 200 kg.

the gold medal was won by Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-ching with an overall lift of 212 kg.

The bronze medal went to South Korea’s Yoon Jin-hee, who managed to hoist 199 kg, said GMA News.
