Marcos to file election protest vs. Robredo

MANILA: Claiming he was a victim of widespread cheating, losing vice presidential candidate Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced he is scheduled to file an election protest on Wednesday, June 29, against Vice President-elect Leni Robredo before the Supreme Court.

Robredo earned 14,418,817 votes during the May 9 presidential election while closest rival Marcos got 14,155,344 votes, a mere difference of 263,473.

Marcos’ lawyer, George Garcia, explained the Supreme Court has the power to hear election protests concerning the presidential and vice presidential elections. It shall sit as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal or PET.

Garcia said Marcos will submit a 3,000-page protest that was very detailed and comprehensive covering 40,000 precincts, or nearly half of the 96,000 clustered precincts nationwide, according to Inquirer.net.

“We want the election results in some areas annulled and set aside,” he told Inquirer.net in a phone interview.
Garcia added they would also seek a judicial recount and revision of ballots.

Marcos is alleging his votes were rigged in favor of Robredo when modifications were made to correct the spellings of the names some voters.
Robredo is scheduled to be sworn-in as the new vice president on June 30.
