‘Don’t discriminate against drivers,’ UAE insurers told

Abu Dhabi: Motor insurance companies are restricted by law from rejecting to insure or discriminating against drivers for any reasons, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, has said.
“Motor insurance firms have to be transparent and must treat all customers the same way,” Al Mansouri was quoted as saying by Gulf News in reply to a question in the Federal National Council about discrimination against young drivers posed by Hamad Ahmad Al Rahoumi, a member from Dubai.

Al Mansouri reportedly said in third party insurance policies which is obligatory by the UAE laws, all drivers — new, young or old, female or male — must have their vehicles insured by the insurance firms without discrimination.

The minister, however, reportedly clarified that firms may refuse to insure someone if the person has a very long record of accidents or traffic violations.
Al Mansouri, who is also chairman of the Insurance Authority, was quoted as saying that people who feel they are being discriminated against can complain to the Insurance Authority.
He added the authority received 3,942 complaints last year from customers, the majority of which were settled amicably, while the remaining cases were referred to courts.

Al Rahoumi reportedly argued some insurance companies were making it hard for new drivers to insure their cars by charging them extra while others even refuse to insure cars of people under 25 years of age. “In some instances, drivers below 25 years of age find difficulties to have their cars insured, which force them to register cars in the name of their parents and relatives,” he was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
