PH nails overall championship in SEA Games 2019

The Philippines has bagged the overall championship title in the just-concluded 30th Southeast Asian Games or SEA Games.

The country clinched back-to-back gold medals in the men and women’s basketball matches held on Tuesday on the eve of the regional meet’s closing ceremonies. The games were held Nov. 30 to Dec. 11.

Gilas Women won against Thailand, 91-71, a historic win for the women’s basketball team.

The Gilas Men on the other hand got their 13th championship title as they won against Thailand too, 115-81.

The country has so far won 149 gold, 117 silver, and 119 bronze or a total of 385 medals.

Vietnam and Thailand are tight on the second and third place.

This year’s record also broke the Philippine SEA Games records in 2005 and 1991 when the country also hosted the regional meet.

“‘Now you could see the margins about 40 gold medals difference between the first and the second. I’m clear that we’re going to be the overall champion for this 30th Southeast Asian Games,” Philippine Olympic Committee Chairman Steve Hontiveros said in an interview.

Closing ceremonies will be held in New Clark City today. Vietnam will host 2021 SEA Games.
